In The Market For Writing Software

As the title suggests, I’m ready to purchase writing software. I’ve heard of Scrivener, but are there other options? I’d love to hear from my fellow writers out there. I’m not terribly interested in programs that also offer options for screenplay. Please leave a comment below if you have any advice and thanks in advance! šŸ™‚

  1. I don’t know anything about other programs, but I would totally swear by Scrivener. Especially if you like outlining but even if you don’t, it’s just invaluable. I’ll never write without it again now. It makes gathering research, maintaining consistency, managing your documents and restructuring SO much easier. And it’s amazing if you do outline and if you have multiple POV characters. Can’t praise it highly enough.

  2. I agree–Scrivener’s great. I don’t use nearly as many of the features as I could be, and I still find it gives me plenty of features and options to work with. I can’t really compare it to many other writing programs (other than Word), but I would recommend it. I think I’ve heard good things about Ulysses, too, but I can’t quite remember any details.

  3. I’ve heard of a few other options, but stick with my traditional word processing: Word. I’d switch to Google Docs, but it limits file size and that often doesn’t work for my picture- and table-intensive non-fic.

    1. thanks jacqui! i’ve downloaded scrivener and am trying it out on a 30 day trail for free. so far it’s been helpful for a short story i’m working on, but when i imported my WIP it doesn’t seem to have any added benefits. i think it’ll be of better use when starting a project from scratch rather than importing an existing project. šŸ™‚ i’ll probably make a post about it once i get more experience.
